Project Goals & Description

Undercover UXO is a landmine-risk education game designed to be played by children in war torn countries. The game teaches players to recognize and avoid environmental indicators that often co-occur with landmines and other unexploded remnants of war.

Version 1.0 of the game is customized for use in Cambodia (images, audio narration), but the game is ready for adaptation to other locales.

The player leads his or her pet in search of food through a photo-realistic terrain, learning to spot and avoid danger signs, like abandoned vehicles or animal remains.

When danger is spotted, a player can call the “inspector” to make the area safe.

Avoiding danger allows the player to advance in their quest to find food for their pet. Walking into a danger zone leads to an explosion. The inspector highlights the indicator, and the player begins again.

Game features include:

  • Images from real-world terrains and real-world danger indicators

  • Terrain image files can be replaced easily to customize for different locales

  • Audio files can easily be replaced with different language narrations to tailor for different locales.

  • The game provides repetition as the player traverses the maze of locales. This repetition is essential to reinforcing the recognition and avoidance decisions necessary for transfer to the real world.
